The Gospel of Mark

This course offers an close reading of selected passages in the Gospel of Mark. Students will learn to recognize Mark's distinctive literary techniques, especially the "Markan sandwich," in which one narrative is intercalated within another to invite comparative reading and disclose meanings not visible in either story alone. The course models a hermeneutic that resists simplistic or pre-packaged readings, cautioning against interpretive shortcuts introduced by Bible chapter divisions and subheadings, and instead demonstrates how to weigh multiple viable interpretations of contested texts. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to read Mark's Gospel with greater literary, historical, and theological depth, and to appreciate how its portrait of Jesus as healer, teacher, suffering Son of Man, and embodiment of Yahweh's presence unfolds progressively across the narrative.

Dr. Robby Waddell

Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity
Dr. Robby Waddell, is a professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, faculty chaplain, and director of the Global Pentecostalism Center at Southeastern University. He is a research fellow of the Centre for Pentecostal Theology (Cleveland, Tennessee). Dr. Waddell serves on the staff of Bangor University’s Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies, where he supervises PhD students. He is a member of the Sheffield Institute of Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies and serves on the editorial boards of Sheffield Phoenix Press and Pneuma: The Journal of the Society for Pentecostal Studies.
